Guåhan Sustainable Culture

Land and Cultural Reunion: Rematriation

On the island of Guåhan (the U.S. territory of Guam), Guåhan Sustainable Culture is empowering community members to relocalize their food system while actively celebrating and sustaining CHamoru Indigenous culture. Rooted in place and relationship, this work centers food as both nourishment and cultural continuity, strengthening community self-determination through local production, shared knowledge, and collective care.

As the first initiative of its kind on Guåhan, Guåhan Sustainable Culture offers an essential and practical vision for sustainability and resilience. By reconnecting people to land, food, and culture, they are helping to cultivate pathways toward greater food sovereignty, community well-being, and long-term resilience in the face of ongoing colonial and environmental pressures.
